Now for today’s devotional blog entry:

By now, many people have taken down their Christmas decorations and have thrown the Christmas tree out on the curb for the trash man to pick up. Although the long-awaited holiday is just eight days past, we are moving on in our minds, full steam ahead into the new year. But let’s not allow the glow of the season to rush from our consciousness so fast. It’s extremely important to remember the whole point of the holiday season is to remind us that Jesus entered history. Let’s review that entry one more time:

Mary was minding her own business when God just invaded her life. He didn’t ask her about her plans, her hopes, or her dreams. He didn’t go to her parents to see if His plan for her would be all right with them. He didn’t discuss things with her fiancé until after Mary had submitted to the plan either. The announcement of the plan and Mary’s reaction were as follows:

  • God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!”
  • Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean.
  • “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
  • Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”
  • The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she’s now in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.”
  • Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her. Luke 1:26-38 (NLT)

God’s plan for Mary had been crafted long before Mary existed in reality, but not before she existed in the mind and heart of the Planner. The same is true of us. God’s plan—for the Savior to enter into our lives and grow there—was crafted long before we existed in reality, but not before we existed in the mind and heart of the Master Planner. May we be as submissive as Mary was to God’s invasion into our lives. May we say to God on a daily basis, “I am Your servant. May everything You have said about me come true.”
