9/30/16: Opportunity is Knocking

unknownThe internet lists some great quotes about opportunity:

  • Even when opportunity knocks a man still has to get up off his seat and open the door. – Author Unknown
  • The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes. – Benjamin Disraeli
  • Opportunities are never lost; someone will take the one you miss. – Author Unknown
  • Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. – Thomas Edison
  • There is no scarcity of opportunity to make a living at what you love; there’s only scarcity of resolve to make it happen. – Wayne Dyer
  • Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently. –  Henry Ford
  • If you pick the right people and give them the opportunity to spread their wings and put compensation as a carrier behind it you almost don’t have to manage them. – Jack Welch
  • Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness.  – Lucius Annaeus Seneca

These were just a few of the quotes I found dealing with opportunity. They are good, true sayings, so I wondered what the Bible had to say about the subject. Galatians 6:10 says, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (NKJ). The word translated “opportunity” in this verse is the Greek word “kairos” which means “an occasion, the set or proper time.” This word is used 87 times in the New Testament, but only twice is it translated as “opportunity.” God is making a very precise statement to us about opportunity here in Galatians. He’s saying that whenever the occasion presents itself, we are to do good to everyone, especially to other believers.

So, bringing some of the wise sayings to bear upon this ultimate truth about opportunity, let’s not let the chance to do good to someone pass us by; someone else is liable to do what we should have done and reap the benefits that could have been ours. It will take some work and resolve to change our thinking and focus on the good we can do to others. Let’s take the opportunity to do for others what they need done, not necessarily what we want to do for them.

What Christian sister or brother needs your tangible help today? What can you do to be good to that person? Mail a card; shoot an e-mail, text, or tweet; send a financial gift; prepare a meal; give a ride; pay a bill; do a dreaded task or chore; forgive a wrong and never mention it or hold it over that person’s head again. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and ask, “What’s a great thing that can happen for her/him today?” and then make that happen. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by.

Unknown-2Mission Trip Update! 10 days to go! I can really still use your financial donations. Gifts you now send between today and when we leave are still necessary for personal expenses and gift books. Since I was not able to raise enough money to ship a large number of books for all the ladies who will attend the women’s conferences, I will pack as many Power Suit books as possible (to meet the weight restrictions) to give to pastor’s wives and the women at the television stations in Kenya and Zambia; and I’ll take as many Why I Get Into Trouble children’s books and I’ll figure out a way to distribute them.

img_2036The trip has been narrowed down to KENYA and ZAMBIA! I’ve seen the proof of the posters that will be passed out and the billboards that will be placed throughout the cities. I will be teaching at the Leader’s Seminars, encouraging the ladies at the Women’s Seminars, and preaching at the evening crusades. People travel all over the world every day, but it’s my first time and I’m pinching myself being sure it’s all actually real! Thank you in advance! You can give three ways:

  1. Via Paypal through my ministry website: http://www.lifethatmatters.net. Click “Donate.” [Remember that Paypal charges a 3-4% fee on my end.]
  2. By check sent to my post office box: P.O. Box 1519, Inglewood, CA 90308
  3. Via Paypal through the HSBN.tv website. (Be sure to let the network know your donation is for Rev. Sharon Elliott’s Africa trip.)
