9/2/16: We Fall Down, But We Get Up

imgresDonny McClurkin’s popular praise lyric says, “We fall down but we get up. For a saint is just a sinner who fell down and got up.” This line is backed up by Scripture. Proverbs 24:16 clearly states, “For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity” (NIV).

It’s good news to know that there’s a difference between the righteous and the wicked. The righteous are the just; that is, those who live by faith. Living by faith doesn’t mean we’ll never have problems. The word used to describe when a righteous person falls is the Hebrew word “naphal.” Naphal means a great variety of things including to be judged by mistake, to be overwhelmed, and to have an inferior inheritance (to be done wrong). Basically this means that righteous people can and will experience troubles.

However, the fall of the wicked is much different. The wicked are “rasha,” those who are morally wrong, actively bad people. They are guilty before God and their unrepentant state means they are living in condemnation. The Hebrew word used for their fall is “kashal” which means to waver through weakness of the legs, especially the ankles. This kind of fall has to do with inner decay. No wonder this person can’t get back up.

So you see, since believers are strengthened in the inner man, they keep getting back up. The attacks are coming from without, not from within. Satan is constantly forming weapons against them, but none of those weapons can ever prosper. Why? Because the believer’s strength is from within. It’s impossible to be successful against that which God has protected. “… your life is hidden with Christ in God” Colossians 3:3 (NKJ). Be encouraged by the following verses about the strength afforded to the people of God!

  •  The LORD is their strength, and He is the saving refuge of His anointed. Psalm 28:8 (NKJ)
  • In the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul. Psalm 138:3 (NKJ)
  • He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:29-31 (NIV)
  • Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 (NKJ)
  • My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Second Corinthians 12:9 (NKJ)
  • …have a walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy. Colossians 1:10-11 (NKJ)

“For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again…” Rise means accomplish, endure, continue, get up, make good, help, be newly ordained, perform, remain, rise up against, rouse up, establish, stand up, stir up, make sure, and succeed.

We fall down, but we get up!
