8/25/16: Change is Possible

Unknown-1In the context of a discussion about Christians taking each other to court before an unbelieving judge, Paul chides the Corinthian believers saying they ought to be able to settle things between themselves, even if that means suffering the wrong. He tells them that one of these days, the righteous will judge the angels, so certainly they should be able to judge their petty differences here on earth.

Paul goes on to point out to them that they get upset with others about the very things they used to do themselves. He assures them God has it set up in His economy for only the righteous to “make it in.” We take up the narrative at verse nine:

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (NKJ).

UnknownThe final verse of that passage is what gets me. “And such were some of you. But…” We want to give up on people – throw in the towel – when we don’t see a change. What if Momma or Grandma had decided to stop praying for us? What if our Christian friends had decided to turn a blind eye to our foolishness instead of standing up to us and telling us where we were going wrong? What if God had decided to give up on us?

imagesSome of the items listed in the verse above are sins we look on as unforgiveable, but we’re cool with some of the others. Why? Because those “others” were our sins and we know God can forgive those. Our own prejudices make us feel the ones we haven’t experienced or don’t understand are somehow more vile. But trust and believe, both our past sins and the sins we have not personally committed are just as putrid in God’s nostrils.

We changed thanks to God’s grace; folks committing those “other” sins can change by His grace too. Keep on praying. Keep on believing for the souls of those involved in sins that are choking them and keeping them from the amazing life in God they could be experiencing. There but for the grace of God, go us.
