8/24/16: The Why-Me-God Blues

UnknownWe don’t know why God does the things He does. All we need to know is God’s attributes and then we can confidently flow with whatever He decides to do. In other words, once we learn to trust God for who He is, we’ll be okay with whatever He does because we’ll know that whatever He does is always in line with His character. When I was a little girl, I learned a Sunday School song which lyrics were this:

God is love, God is truth,

God is mercy, God is youth,

God is power, God is right,

God is wisdom, God is light.

This little song helps us – it can even help little kids – to accept what God does even if we don’t quite understand everything about why He is doing it. For example, if we know God was love, we can rightly judge the imitations of love that come our way. If we recognize that God is almighty and has all power, we can securely rest in His protection of us, and so on.

Job’s young friend Elihu gave some counsel to Job along these same lines. He said, “God thunders marvelously with His voice; he does great things which we cannot comprehend… Also with moisture He saturates the thick clouds; he scatters His bright clouds. And they swirl about, being turned by His guidance, that they may do whatever He commands them on the face of the whole earth. He causes it to come, whether for correction, or for His land, or for mercy” Job 37:5, 11-13 (NKJ).

Elihu says that we don’t even know what God is doing when it comes to the rain. He points out that God has three reasons for sending the rain: it comes “for correction, or for His land, or for mercy.” This insight can help us to relax and flow with God’s purpose when trouble comes our way. Perhaps the problem exists because we need correction. Hebrews 12:7-8 says, “If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons” (NKJ).

We may be facing our trial because God wants to tend His land. We learn from our trials and if we’re attentive, we grow stronger from them and can look back and realize that God was teaching us something we needed to know. James 1:3-4 says, “Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (NKJ).

Finally, God may be sending the rain as a soothing salve because we are in need of mercy. When we’ve been in a dry spot, rain symbolizes refreshment and cleansing. For example, God uses this metaphor of pouring out blessings when we faithfully tithe. “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.” Malachi 3:10 (NKJ).

So the next time we are singing the why-me-God blues, remember that God has His reasons. All we need to do is hang on and continue to trust in who He is. Nothing He brings or allows in our lives is out of His control, and nothing He ushers to us is contrary to His character.
