8/10/16: Good News as We Grow Older

IMG_1494Once I crossed the fifty-year-old threshold, I suddenly realized there may be less days ahead of me than behind me. Since that revelation, every now and then, my mind floats to wondering how in the world I’m going to get everything done that’s on my “bucket list.” All the contents of that list will remain inside of me for now, but I do have a list, and am excited about the prospect of checking each thing off. But time is of the essence. That’s why Psalm 92:12-15 sounds like good news to me. Here it is in the New King James Version with my bold italics added for emphasis:

12      The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

13      Those who are planted in the house of the Lord, Shall flourish in the courts of our God.

14      They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing,

15      To declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

Thanks to 2 Corinthians 5:21, we know this passage applies to us because “…He (God) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (NKJ). So, as the righteous, we ourselves flourish, being planted in the house of the Lord; and we will remain fresh and flourishing in old age as we continue to bear fruit. This continued productivity declares the Lord’s righteousness and our dependence upon Him.

As I grow older and desire to do many Kingdom things, this is certainly good news to me. How about you?
