7/17/16: About Service

Unknown-2AFRICA TRIP UPDATE: Plans have slightly changed. Our team will now minister in Lusaka, Zambia and Eldoret, Kenya. Please remember to send your gift to support the upcoming Africa missions trip! All who donate will receive a special thank you gift! See below for details about giving. Now for today’s devotion…

imagesI suppose I’ve been in Christian service my entire life. At two-years-old, I was setting up chairs in my living room for my daddy to teach Sunday School to the neighborhood kids. Choir rehearsals and church youth group activities dotted my calendar throughout my developmental years. Then even before I graduated from college, I began teaching in a Christian school. I’ve served at three Christian schools: ten years at one, 17 years at the other, and 6 years and counting at another. Additionally, I’m employed for God independently as an author, preacher, editor, and religious broadcaster. I appreciating His employee benefits. It’s amazing to see first hand how He works things out on my behalf and for my provision. Oh that I remain awestruck.

Maybe a lack of captivation and amazement is what caused many of the Old Testament kings to turn away from following God wholeheartedly. Second Chronicles 12:1, for example, tells us, “Now it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom and had strengthened himself, that he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel along with him” (NKJ). Soon enough, God allowed enemies to attack them as punishment for abandoning their dedication to Him. When the king and the leaders humbled themselves, God spoke through the prophet Shemaiah and said, “They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance. My wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. Nevertheless they will be his servants, that they may distinguish My service from the service of the kingdoms of the nations” Second Chronicles 12:7-8 (NKJ).

There exists a distinguishable difference between serving fully in God’s kingdom employ and serving the kingdoms we’ve allowed to rule over us. If we’re not careful, we can find ourselves as God’s people working beneath our privilege because of the lack of wholehearted devotion to Him. We can get so comfortable with the strength we feel and with what God has allowed us to establish, that we actually forsake the law of the Lord. The crux of the problem is found in verse 14 of the same chapter. “And he (Rehoboam) did evil, because he did not prepare his heart to seek the LORD” Second Chronicles 12:14 (NKJ).

As you and I serve God unreservedly in whatever profession He’s called us to, may we remember to prepare our hearts to continually seek the Lord. May we never have to succumb to serving kingdoms other than His.
