7/12/16: When You’re In Charge

UnknownSomething that is a striking breath of fresh air at my church is how the Sunday School teachers are always on time. They start the classes at exactly 8:30am. They are not rushing in, scrambling to write the lesson outline on the board, or hastily throwing off their coats and laying out their books. They are comfortably ready and in position to do their job of teaching us the lesson for the morning.

Whoever trained those Sunday School teachers did a fabulous job. Because of their diligence, we are able to readily receive the lessons they have prepared; but more importantly, because of their example, we are able to apply the lessons more easily.

Much like our church’s teachers’ trainer, King Jehoshaphat laid out the guidelines for the judges he placed throughout the cities of Judah. He started by saying, “Take heed to what you are doing, for you do not judge for man but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment. Now therefore, let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take care and do it…” 2 Chronicles 19:6-7 (NKJ). The king goes on to list the specifics of their job, but again he comes back to the responsibility of their own inner selves in their position. “Thus you shall act in the fear of the LORD, faithfully and with a loyal heart” 2 Chronicles 19:9.

Whenever we’re in charge of something, especially something concerning the Lord’s people, it’s imperative that we not take that lightly. We must realize our position of leadership is for the Lord and He is judging us by how we represent Him. In that light, as Jehoshaphat said, we too must take heed to what we are doing, let the fear of the Lord be upon us, and take care and do our job faithfully and with a loyal heart.
