7/1/16: What’s Your Tagline?

UnknownA tagline is a slogan or phrase that visually conveys the most important product attribute or benefit that the advertiser wishes to convey. It is generally a theme to a campaign or a theme to what your business means. The tagline for Life That Matters Ministries is Live Significantly! Whenever people interact with any aspect of my ministry — my speaking or preaching, my books, my blog, AuthorizeMe(R), or a Milk & Honey Life Retreat(c) — my desire is that they go away better equipped to live a life that makes a significant difference in Jesus’ name in their sphere of influence.

We can recite taglines that have become associated with successful products. For example, when you drink Sprite® you “Obey your Thirst,” and when you go to Burger King®, you can “Have it Your Way.” We all know Coca Cola® is “The Real Thing,” and Nike® encourages us to “Just Do It.” The tagline turns our minds to the important attribute of that company and when we want whatever that is; we know where we can go to get it.

In I Chronicles chapter 26, as God is enumerating what could seem like a very boring list of the names of the men who worked in the temple, He steps aside every now and then to give us some taglines for the men being listed.

  • In verses 4 – 5, when God tells us of the sons of Obed-Edom, he remarks at the end of the list of eight sons, “for God blessed him.”
  • In verse 6, we read that the sons of Shemaiah were “men of great ability.”
  • Again in verse 8, the men of the line of Obed-Edom are pronounced as “able men with strength for the work.”
  • Verse 14 tells us that Zechariah was “a wise counselor.”
  • Verses 30-31 tell us of the 1,700 “capable men” who were in charge of “all the business of the Lord, and in the service of the king.”

Throughout the Bible, God refers to people in certain ways that sounds much like He’s given them a tagline. For example, when we hear the phrase “a man after God’s own heart,” we immediately think of David. Jesus has many taglines. He’s the Good Shepherd; the Vine; the Alpha and Omega; and the Way, the Truth, and the Life, just to name a few.

Think today of how you are living your life. Think of what people see and of what only God sees. What would be a slogan or phrase that visually conveys the most important attribute, benefit, or value of who you are? What tagline would God give you?
