6/28/16: Can’t Touch This!

Unknown-1imagesWikipedia tells us that “U Can’t Touch This,” MC Hammer‘s 1990 hit signature song, was the primary reason the singer’s album that year sold more than 10 million copies. The lyrics describe the rapper as having “toured around the world, from London to the Bay” and as being “magic on the mic.” The point of the song was to say that no one else was as good or could come even close to rapping like he did. The catchphrase “can’t touch this” became a part of the culture, expressed whenever you wanted to claim superiority at whatever you were doing.

If M.C. Hammer had been around during the time of the early church, Gamaliel may have used the phrase as he talked some sense into the religious leaders who were trying to stop the apostles from teaching in Jesus’ name. After being sternly commanded not to teach of Christ anymore, Peter and the other apostles persisted anyway. In Acts chapter 5, the leaders tried throwing them in prison, but God busted them out, and they went right back to preaching. When rearrested, Peter boldly proclaimed, “We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him” Acts 5:29-32 (NKJ).

Needless to say, this didn’t sit too well with those leaders. They were furious and decided to find a way to kill the apostles too. That’s when Gamaliel, described as “a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people” (verse 34), stepped in. He reminded the leaders that others had presented themselves, gained a following, and then in time the excitement wore off and things got back to normal. He ends his discourse by saying, “And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it– lest you even be found to fight against God” Acts 5:38-39 (NKJ).

Gamaliel realized you “can’t touch this” when something is of God. Be encouraged today in what you are doing for God. Keep in mind that no matter how hard others may try to stop you – including the devil in hell – nothing that God wants done will ever be left undone. Everything that God has established for you to accomplish will indeed be accomplished by you. Just look the haters in the face and say, “Can’t touch this!”
