6/27/16: The Inevitable

UnknownSeven years ago, all the other news stories in the world had taken a back seat to the death of Michael Jackson. Many if not all of the news channels were broadcasting stories of Michael’s life, and speculating about exactly how he died. One report said it could take up to eight weeks to get the results of all the tests to actually announce the cause of Michael’s death.

When we’re smacked in the face with the reality of death – be it the passing of a close loved one, a major celebrity, or our own major illness – we begin to hear phrases that could be misleading about the whole process. Let’s clear a few of those up.

  • “He/She can beat this.” Thanks to God’s hand, sometimes miraculously and sometimes through the use of modern medicine, many diseases no longer result in death. However, death for all of us is inevitable and many of us will die of something. “…it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” Heb 9:27.
  • “She is now an angel.” This is a sweet sentiment and makes for lovely pictures on funeral programs, but it’s not true. We never become angels. Angels are a separate class of beings – a different “race” as it were. “What is man that You are mindful of him…For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor” Ps. 8:4-5.
  • “He’s in a better place.” Not necessarily. I John 5:11-12 is crystal clear: “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” Like the bumper sticker says, “No Jesus, no peace: Know Jesus, know peace.” Only those who know Christ as Savior are in Heaven. By default, everyone else’s spirit goes to Hell once separated from the body in physical death.
  • “She’s looking down on us.” Once a person’s spirit is in Heaven, Earth is the last place he/she will ever think about. Paul said it is “better by far” to be with Christ (Phil. 1:23). The Psalmist says of God, “…in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” Ps. 16:11. And John records Jesus telling us, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” John 14:3. Once in Heaven, there’s absolutely no reason to look back. (If a person’s spirit ends up in Hell, unfortunately the eternal torment keeps him busy.)
  • “He’s still here with us.” Again, a nice sentiment, but inaccurate. Eccl. 9:10 says, “…in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.” Once we die, we’re done with everything we could have done in life. On earth, we will only exist in the memories of those who knew us, and in the legacy we’ve left behind.

We get this one chance at life to get it right. In Michael Jackson’s case, initial reports were saying he died of heart failure. Only God knew the real condition of his heart, that is, his spirit. The true tragedy of “heart” failure is not as it relates to the physical heart, but to the spiritual one. Was Michael’s surrendered to Christ? Is yours? Hopefully, you can say with Paul, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” Phil. 1:21.
