6/22/16: A Prudent Wife
We don’t use the word “prudent” very much these days. Perhaps that’s because it means “marked by wisdom or judiciousness, shrewd in the management of practical affairs, marked by circumspection, discreet, and frugal.” Ahhh, there’s another word we don’t use much: “frugal,” and again, perhaps that’s because it means “characterized by or reflecting economy in the use of resources.”
Much of our current recession in America can be blamed on the fact that many of us don’t know how to be prudent and frugal when it comes to our resources. We spend more than we make, we don’t save wisely, and we aren’t true to the principle of tithing. Money problems cause us to spend too many hours at the job, buy into fly-by-night schemes, and suffer from ulcers thanks to worry over making those ends meet. The news even reports the ultimate horror of the murder/suicides that occur because one family member just can’t see a way out of the financial woes.
Proverbs 19:14 has a word for families to avoid this madness. “Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD” (NKJ). A man is supposed to work to be sure his family has provisions. Those provisions are an inheritance. That man knows he has a wife who is from the Lord when he sees her being prudent with what he supplies. The Hebrew word for “prudent” is “sakal” which means “to be circumspect and hence, intelligent: skillful, prosperous, and having good success, understanding, and wisdom: behaving oneself.” In the context of this verse then, the bottom line is that a prudent wife is wise in her handling of the household money. Proverbs 31:11 puts it this way: “The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain” (NKJ), or “Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value” (NIV).
We’re not off the hook if we’re single. Both men and women need to learn to be frugal with money, not only to honor God with what He’s entrusted to us, but to avoid the problems mentioned above. In marriages though, men, thank God for your prudent wife, or pray for her and gently teach her how to exercise monetary control. Women, we must become the prudent wives God calls us to be. By using the household money wisely, we are honoring and respecting our husband’s work as he provides that inheritance for our family. Let it be said of us as the verse above relates, “…a prudent wife is from the Lord.”
