6/10/16: The Truth Will Show

DSC00749 DSC01887What does it say to the well-wishes in attendance at a commencement exercise when the graduates’ names are called, they walk across the stage, shake the principal’s hand, pose for the classic picture, receive the case, and turn their tassels? It means they have graduated. Signed by the principal and a member of the board, the certificate reads, “This diploma is awarded to so-and-so for having completed in a satisfactory manner the prescribed course of study for the such-and-such school.” The graduation ceremony is a celebration of this achievement; therefore, as a key faculty member at the first high school where I taught, I pushed to be sure we did not allow any student to participate in the ceremony if he/she did not indeed satisfactorily complete the prescribed course of study. To allow students to bring Grandma in from out of town, don the cap and gown, smile and wave as they saunter down the aisle, and have their names announced as “graduates” was to perpetrate a lie. It wouldn’t be right at that school; it’s not right anywhere, but it’s especially unconscionable at a Christian school where lying breaks one of the Big Ten.

What we do is the proof of what we actually believe to be true. Talk is cheap; truth is what we live. Pilate discovered this when he met Jesus face-to-face. In a private conversation with the Lord, Pilate asked Jesus if He was a king. Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice” John 18:37 (NKJ). When Pilate heard this answer, he skipped right over that king query, zeroed in on the important point, and immediately countered with the question, “What is truth? (vs. 38)

Pilate was looking the Truth in the eye. How did he know – by what Jesus had said? No. Pilate knew the truth about Jesus by what Jesus had done and he made his judgment, “…he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, ‘I find no fault in Him at all’” John 18:38 (NKJ).

Both well-wishers and haters are watching the “ceremony” that is our lives every day. We will only get away with perpetrating a lie for so long. The truth of what’s really going on in our hearts will certainly be revealed. Think again if you believe you’re hiding; others can see through a dishonest façade and God certainly knows. At the graduation ceremonies at that school where I taught, the audience could be assured that the young people who walked across our stage deserved the accolades because they did indeed complete in a satisfactory manner the prescribed course of study. The truth about us stands or falls, not on what we say, but on what we actually do. Are we satisfactorily completing the courses God has given us? The truth will speak on our behalf.

One Response to “6/10/16: The Truth Will Show”

  1. Christians may wonder if at the end of their life, they will hear the words: “Well done my good and faithful servant.” While we pursue a right relationship with God, no one can live out a life of Godly righteousness without assistance from the indwelling Holy Spirit and our LORD and SAVIOR Jesus Christ who is the mediator between God and man. The Gospels provide an excellent plan of action for people to be justified and sanctified. No matter how hard we work or how obedient we are our relationship with God is based on faith (trust and belief that God is who He says that He is). This faith is a gift from God so that no person can say that they have earned and deserve a relationship with God.

Our human intellect and diligent work ethic will always fail at times. In order to understand truth, everyone must acknowledge that God cannot lie; that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life-the only way to the Father; and the Holy Spirit is the source of all truth. Satan on the other hand is the Father of all lies and liars who comes to steal kill and destroy. Jesus Christ came to destroy the works of the devil and provide abundant life for all those who believe that He is all that He claims to be.

Salvation, Christ’s gift to mankind caused God enormous pain and suffering, but mankind receives complete, and immediate forgiveness of sin when he/she confesses his/her sin, repents from that sin and through the assistance of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit is restored to a right relationship with God. The incredible gift of eternal life is promised to all God’s Children. That is why I want to be a true Child of God when I grow up.
