5/29/16: Act Like Who You Want To Be

When Saul became king over God’s people, he stepped into unfamiliar territory. He had never ruled anything before nor had any of his family before him. He hadn’t gone to King University where he could have taken classes in diplomacy. He didn’t even have the history of other kings of Israel to look back upon for guidance. Once crowned, Samuel the prophet did the only smart thing he could do for Saul and the people. First Samuel 10:25 tells us, “Then Samuel explained to the people the behavior of royalty, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the LORD” (NKJ).

Other translations of the Bible say that Samuel explained “the manner of the kingdom” (KJV), “the ordinances of the kingdom” (NAS), “the regulations of the kingship” (NIV), or “the rules and regulations involved in a kingdom” (The Message). Commentators say that Samuel explained the king’s responsibilities and limitations and the people’s responsibilities. I believe the wording of the New King James version sheds additional light on things here. Samuel had to make clear “the behavior or royalty.”

When we come into a new realm or reach that proverbial “next level,” someone needs to explain to us how we should conduct ourselves in our new place or position. What’s expected of me when I step into independence for the first time? How should I act as a new wife or husband? What’s required of me as a new mother or father? How do I carry myself as the boss? What are my responsibilities as a A-List celebrity? What should my deportment be as royalty?

We cannot carry a ghetto mentality into the royal courts. Just as Saul had to learn how to be king, we have to learn how to conduct ourselves as saints of the most high God. We are ambassadors for the Kingdom, representing our new country of origin – Heaven.  The Message Bible paraphrases Ephesians 4:22-24 powerfully to make this point. It says, “Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.”

Our life in Christ demands a change in our deportment. Let’s be about the business of understanding and applying the behavior of royalty.

One Response to “5/29/16: Act Like Who You Want To Be”

  1. Christians today are called to live a very difficult life. We are to support and encourage one another and build one another up. Christians must be in the business of helping other Christians experience an abundant life and oppose all those who would go about “looking for someone to devour” or in other words from whom they can steal kill and destroy. As Christians we are called upon to speak the truth in love to help correct a others and restore them to a right relationship with God.

In today’s world, problems with life are as common in the church as outside. Christians must help one another navigate life’s extremely difficult issues. To do this we must point people to the answer to life’s problems-Jesus Christ. Only Jesus Christ is available 24/7/365 for all who are willing to pursue Him and ask Him for His assistance.
