4/1/16: You Get What You Come For

I attend Christian writers’ conferences. At these gatherings, we hopeful authors gather to learn all about writing and the writing life from acquisitions editors, freelancers, agents, manuscript reviewers, and publicists. The editors get the most attention because they have the power to give a thumbs-up to our projects and launch them into the process toward becoming published pieces.

Simply being in the editors’ presence though, is not enough to reach our publishing goals. We are expected to approach one of them with our proposals. Unless we make that contact, the wheels will not start turning for us and we’ll return home with the same ideas with which we arrived, no closer to publication than we were before we spent the money to attend the conference. In order to get what we went for, we had to speak up and take advantage of the reason why the editors were there – to find new projects for their companies to publish.

In Luke 5:17, we find a similar scenario: “Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them” (NKJ). The pronoun “them” at the end of that verse refers back to the Pharisees and teachers of the law. God’s power was available to make them whole. So why then didn’t they walk away whole? Another guy, whose friends pushed past some barriers to help him get to Jesus, took advantage of the healing that was initially present that day to heal the Pharisees and the teachers of the law. Although the big shots were in Jesus’ presence, they failed to take advantage of the power He had for them because they refused to get involved with Him.

William Carey, a famous missionary to India, had a motto: Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God. At every writers’ conference I attend, I approach editors pitching new ideas that I fully expect they will love and their houses will publish. Once I get the word of acceptance (a contract) from the publisher, I’m immediately on the move to finish writing that manuscript. I approach God’s word every day with that same zeal. I expect to hear amazing things from Him that are vital to my life and that He fully expects me to put into action immediately. And every day, I get what I came for.

Do you expect to receive something from Gods’ word every time you read it? You should. And then is your attitude one that is determined to receive what He has for you and put it into action immediately? It should be. You get from God what you come for.

Africa Trip Update: Be assured, the entry sent yesterday entitled “Special Request” is not a scam. I really am part of a mission team slated to go to Africa in October 2016 to preach the Gospel and encourage the saints! I need your prayers and financial assistance. Bless those of you who have already given! We’re a long way from meeting the need, but we’ve started toward it! Please see the entry entitled “Special Request” that was dated 3/31/16 for details and donation instructions. I’ll keep you posted!
