3/16/16: The Desire to be Heard

In the film adaptation of the Broadway smash hit Dreamgirls, Deena Jones finally reaches her breaking point because her husband and manager, Curtis, has defined her. Having grown to the place in her life and career where she now wants to define herself, she belts out the lyrics of the song entitled “Listen” and says, “You should have listened; there is someone here inside, someone I’d thought had died so long ago. Oh I’m free now and my dreams will be heard; they will not be pushed aside or turned into your own all cause you won’t listen…”

Plato said, “Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something.” One of our basic human desires is to be heard; but more than that, it’s to be understood. We feel valuable when others actually listen to and understand what we are trying to communicate. The opposite is also true: we feel devalued when our thoughts, opinions, suggestions, and ideas are overlooked, or worse, criticized.

Today’s good news is that even if others aren’t listening, God is. Psalm 34:15 says, “The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry” (NKJ). Verse 17 of the same Psalm repeats that sentiment, “The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears…” What’s so great about this is not just that God hears, but He also understands exactly what we need, and then He moves. Verse 17 goes on to say, “…and delivers them out of all their troubles.” Verses 18 – 22 continue to prove that God hears because we see Him working on our behalf.

  • “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all. He guards all his bones; not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous shall be condemned. The LORD redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned” (NKJ).

Look at all those great verbs showing what God does because He’s listening: He delivers, saves, guards, and redeems. Pretty amazing, wouldn’t you agree? So since He’s listening, spend some time talking with Him today. As a matter of fact, now would be a good time. He’s available.
