120715: Wait For It
By the end of a pregnancy, most women are anxious for that baby to arrive. We’re tired of dragging around the weight of the baby and the pounds gained; our feet, faces, and hands have swollen; we’re having weird cravings, and we’re tired of going to the bathroom all the time. The hospital bag is packed and we’re just ready to get on with it.
Sometimes we may feel that way about the coming of the Lord. We look around at the troubles under which our world labors – the incessant onslaught of terrorist activity, wars that seem unwinnable, AIDS, cancer, social unrest due to racial police violence, etc. – and we think as the Apostle John requested, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” Revelation 22:20 (KJV). Let’s just get on with it! Problems are so pervasive, that we may even be tempted to think God no longer cares or may not even exist. Peter tells us that “scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming?’…” 2 Peter 3:3-4 (NKJ).
Do not lose heart. Peter goes on to explain: “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night…” 2 Peter 3:9-10a.
God is waiting, saying, “Wait for it,” in order to give us time to get ourselves right with Him. He is coming, be assured of that, and He is going to set all things in order. In the meantime, knowing that He is coming one of these days, we are required to hang in there “in holy conduct and godliness,” and “looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless” 2 Peter 3:11 and 14. The neat thing is that we can “account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation…” 2 Peter 3:15.
Oh how God’s “wait for it” reveals His love for us!
