2/13/14: Don’t Listen

We’re often told, “Follow your heart,” when it comes to choosing a career path or a love interest, or making other important decisions about our future. Surprisingly, a Bible verse suggests the opposite. Jeremiah 17:9 (NKJ) says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” God is saying that the heart, the intellectual and directive center of our being, is full of treachery and guile. What makes the heart this way? It is “hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” Hebrews 3:13 (NKJ). And that sin refers to either the original sin nature or the sin all around “which so easily ensnares us” Hebrews 12:1 (NKJ). Since this is so, it behooves us not to follow our heart.

So then, if we don’t follow our heart, what should we follow? In Jeremiah 17:10, (the verse following the warning about our heart), God says, “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.” Since God knows our heart, we can follow Him instead of it. He searches our hearts and tests our minds, in order to reward or punish us according to the outcome of our actions. If we follow our deceitful hearts, the outcome of our actions will only be destruction. However, if we surrender our sin-soaked heart to God, and allow Him to live there and make it new, we can follow Him and be assured of outcomes that will bring Him glory and honor.

So, don’t listen to your heart until you surrender it to God and He makes it His residence. Worship Jesus who dwells in each heart that opens to Him.

P.S. Read Romans 3:23, Romans 5:8, Romans 6:23, and Romans 10:9-10. Pray, believe, and welcome to the Family!
