12/28/13: Inventory of Purpose

God told Zechariah the prophet to ask all the people and the priests this questions: “When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you really fast for Me—for Me? When you eat and when you drink, do you not eat and drink for yourselves? Should you not have obeyed the words which the Lord proclaimed through the former prophets when Jerusalem and the cities around it were inhabited and prosperous, and the South and the Lowland were inhabited?’” Zechariah 7:5-7 (NKJ)

These rhetorical questions from God to His people indicated that they had lost focus. They were doing right things for wrong reasons. The focal point of their worship had switched from God to themselves. Instead of fasting to enter His presence, they were fasting to receive His presents. Instead of rejoicing over how God allowed them to participate in His plan, they were rejoicing over how God prospered their plans. They had tweeked their concentration and the result was a missing of the mark altogether.

In response to His own questions, God went on to redirect the people’s attention to their original purpose, which was quite simple. “Execute true justice, show mercy and compassion everyone to his brother. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother” Zechariah 7:9-10 (NKJ).

It’s a good idea every once in a while to take an inventory of purpose. When is the last time we stepped back and asked ourselves, “Are we doing things God’s way?” Are we performing our worship for Him or for ourselves? Are we celebrating for Him or for ourselves? Are we obeying the word of the Lord that came to us in times past? Are we doing the simple things: executing justice; showing mercy and compassion; doing good to the widow, orphan, stranger, poor people; and restraining from planning evil in our hearts against others?

It just may be time to allow God to do some redirecting of our purpose to make sure it lines up with His purpose for us.
