11/4: Water with Salt

Niagara Falls

Living as Christ-followers nowadays is like being the H2O in ocean water.  We Christians are everywhere. There’s a church within walking distance of most people in urban and suburban areas. Christian radio and TV stations can be readily heard or watched over the airways. Thousands of Christian websites and blogs are immediately available via the Internet. And as far as I know, the Bible is still the #1 best seller worldwide.

Yet, as with ocean water, folks cannot drink in our H2O without also swallowing deadly salt (brine). Our divisiveness, hatred, jealousies, pettiness, and even denominational hills on which we choose to die, cancel out the effectiveness of the “living water” that is the Word. What should be the salt that is flavoring the world has lost its savor and has become the brine that—along with all the rest of the mess in the world—is making the message of the Gospel loathsome to the world that so desperately needs it.

We should strive to be communicators of the clean and clear “living water.” Through whatever ministry God gives us, our heart’s desire should be for our words to reflect His heart, and be like pure water that not only refreshes the inside, but also washes the outside. In other words, the impact of our communication of the living water of the Word will affect change on the inside of men’s hearts, that will spill out to affect change in outward behavior. The “salt” in our messages would bring flavor to the readers and listeners in terms of insight, encouragement, peace, joy, and edification.

John 7:38 says, “He that believeth on me as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” Drink in what Jesus gives, never be thirsty again, and watch as His life wells up in you and spurts out in all you say and do (John 4:14).
