10/9 End of Discussion

While walking along the beach boardwalk in San Diego, my husband and I witnessed something we love to see: a father lovingly yet determinedly verbally disciplining his son. The little boy was about 4 or 5-years-old and stepped up onto the edge of a curb just above the water into which he could have plummeted into the ocean. The father raised his voice slightly and in his daddy-deep-bass commanded, “Get down!”

The boy obeyed but questioned, “How come?”

The father didn’t go into a long explanation about the height, the rocks below, and the agony he and the family would face if he fell and hurt himself. Dad simply answered, “Because I said so.” That was the end of the discussion between the father and the son about that curb.

Sometimes God’s not going to go into a long explanation about the extent of the dangers we face or the reasons He’s allowed certain things to happen or not to happen. He simply says, “Don’t,” or “Stop,” or “Stay away.” Or sometimes, like in Job’s case, He says nothing at all; He just gives us “that look” in our heart.

God’s word is full of His loving direction, all intended for our best interest.

  • Flee fornication. 1 Corinthians 6:18
  • …come out from among them, and be ye separate… touch not the unclean thing… 2 Corinthians 6:17
  • Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Ephesians 5:21
  • Honour thy father and thy mother… Exodus 20:12
  • Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together… Hebrews 10:25
  • Etc.

Once the Father gives a command, we are wasting our breath to ask Him, “How come?” Take His word at face value simply because He said so. End of discussion.
