9/23/13: Give

A few years ago, with a huge smile on my face, I watched the Lakers’ victory parade celebrating their championship season and playoff win. They gave 80,000 – 100,000 people jammed into the historic memorial Coliseum, another 60,000 or so lined along the parade route, and innumerable folks like me at home, a reason to celebrate because the team brought the winning trophy and bragging rights home to Los Angeles.

I thought further, though, about what those young men had given their whole lives. Before those guys were famous and rich, they had spent hours and hours practicing alone in gyms and driveways, back yards and courts of city parks. They had given up parties with friends to ride on team buses to tournaments. They had given up hanging out in order to study while in high school so they would be eligible to play on the school’s team, hopefully to be recognized by a scout. I understand that Kobe Bryant still gives of himself this way, staying in tip-top shape even during the off season, so when the time comes to play again, he’ll be ready. Sure now the men on the Lakers team make millions of dollars, but no amount of money could have paid for the overwhelming feeling they received from the outpouring of gratitude they witnessed at the victory celebration. All that giving paid off.

In Acts 3:6, Peter said to the lame man, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you…” (NIV). What do you have to give, how have you nurtured those gifts, and are you willing to give them away? “A gift opens the way for the giver and ushers him into the presence of the great” Proverbs 18:16 (NIV). You will never run out of something to give when what you are giving is what God has given you.
