9/11/13: Gone Fishing

9/11: Gone Fishing

In John 21: 1-3, we see Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, James, John, and two other disciples hanging out together. These guys had known each other for a long time, and we know for sure that at least three of them – Peter, James, and John – shared a common interest – fishing. It would seem like nothing unusual for this group of friends to take a day and go kick back on a little excursion, so when Peter proclaimed, “I am going fishing,” the rest of the group quickly decided to go along too.

There’s one little catch here, though. Peter, James, and John didn’t used to fish for fun. Fishing was their profession before Jesus called them and changed their job description. They were no longer in the business of fishing for fish; they were supposed to be fishing for men for the Kingdom. To make matters worse, this fishing trip took place after the Resurrection. The alive-forever Lord had appeared to them, proving definitively who He was, yet these guys have reverted back to their old ways.

Surprisingly, Jesus joins the fishing expedition by appearing on the shore, telling them how to catch fish, preparing lunch for them, and re-calling them to commitment to Him. Read the rest of John chapter 21 and watch how Jesus especially hones in on Peter, bringing his understanding to the one thing he had to worry about. Jesus finally tells Peter to stop hassling about everything else, “You follow Me” (John 21:22 NKJV, emphasis added).

Have you “gone fishing” by avoiding something God has clearly called you to do? Perhaps it’s something as basic as attending church regularly, reading your Bible daily, praying consistently, or tithing faithfully. Or God may have impressed upon you a need to honor your parents, live a holy single life, love your wife, submit to your husband, or obey your employer. Maybe He’s told you to make a move, start a business, write a book, or patiently wait for further instructions. Whatever it may be (listed here or not), Jesus is on your shore, beckoning you back to commitment. His word to you today is the same as what He said to Peter, “You follow Me.”
