9/2/13: Come On

When we face difficult circumstances, the first reaction for most of us is to simply handle the situation. Our minds start figuring the angles and formulating steps to get us out of the situation and back on course. But sometimes, the circumstances are overbearing. No matter how hard we try, we can’t seem to fight our way out of the bag. We read what others have written, talk with experts, and do internet searches to see how others have handled the same type of situation. In the midst of it all, we also do one more thing, we pray.

Jesus, however, has given us a completely different plan of attack. He doesn’t tell us to take care of the problem ourselves. And although you may have heard that you should “take your burdens to the Lord and leave them there,” Jesus’ remedy in Matthew chapter 11 actually doesn’t tell us to put anything down; it only tells us to pick something up.

Now you may be thinking, That’s odd. I’m already carrying a heavy weight. Why would I want to take on more?

Good question. The answer is, “I don’t know why this should work. All I know is what the passage says.” Read it for yourself.

“ ‘My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.’ Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls’” Matthew 11:27-29 (NLT).

You see, when we’re facing issues that we can’t understand and can’t shake, issues that are making us weary, issues that are heavy burdens to carry, Jesus says to do three things. First, come to Him. Second, take His yoke upon ourselves. Third, let Him teach us. The result? He will give us rest.
