8/12: Jesus Our Personal Savior

If you are a regular customer at Nordstrom, a fine, high-end department store, you can choose one of the salespeople to be your personal shopper. She will get to know you, your style preferences, and your career and lifestyle needs. Then whenever you are ready to shop, you can call her in advance, and she will have some choices waiting for you when you arrive. She’ll also call you with a heads-up on sales and new arrivals. What a service!

In John, chapter 20, Jesus shows Himself to be, not our personal shopper, but our personal Savior. He knew Mary Magdalene’s need as she stood outside His empty tomb, longing to know where He was. He stopped on His way to Heaven to comfort her. (See John 20:11-17.) Jesus also made a special trip to assure Thomas who would only believe Jesus was alive if he could see and touch the scars for himself. (See John 20:26-29.)

Like Mary and Thomas, sometimes, especially after traumatic events (they had seen the Lord die), we too need to be assured of His presence. The Lord may seem to us to be dead – unaware of our situation, unconcerned about our plight, or just plain gone. Take heart from what He did for Mary and Thomas. Know that He loves us so much, that He will stop what He’s doing to show Himself to us.

Be on the lookout for your personal Savior’s appearance. Jesus promised to always be with you (Matthew 28:20), He’s living to intercede for you (Hebrews 7:25), and II Corinthians 9:8 says, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (NIV). Since He knows your needs, He’s on the lookout for you. What a service!
