7/26: Our Part Once Enrolled

Every year, I meet new young people as students in my classes. On the first day, I speak to each class about my expectations for their success. In that little speech, I explain that in order for them to achieve said success, I also expect certain behavior. Inevitably, several students decide they can misbehave and still have an easy go of it. Those students are sadly mistaken. I am still determined to get those misbehaving students to a positive end; however, they make their life in my class quite difficult for themselves. They are enrolled like every other student. They can legitimately attend student functions, wear the t-shirts, and receive student discounts, but their behavior thwarts their joy.

The same is true for us as believers. Our happiness quotient rests on our adherence to the King’s principles. Like the disobedient students in my classroom. They’re enrolled. They’re part of the student body. But they’re making their own lives miserable by their disobedience and their stubborn insistence on doing things their way. We’re saved. We’re Christians. Our names are in the Lamb’s book of life, but we’re making our earthly lives miserable (and may be cutting them short) by our own disobedience and by our stubborn insistence to do things our way.

In Acts 26:19, during his defense in front of King Agrippa, Paul said that a Christian’s duty is to “repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.” Salvation is freely supplied, and then our part begins once enrolled. Let’s get busy doing those “works befitting repentance.”
