5/27: Why This?

One of our sons incurred a physical hardship when he was in college. This is an issue that, barring a miracle, he will have to live with the rest of his life, and during his adjustment period, he became a bit depressed about this. He even questioned why God had allowed this problem in his life. Why this? Was it something he had done?

Whenever someone wants to know if difficulty or sickness is because of sin in their lives, unless there’s a very clear yes from some past incident, the answer to that question is found in John 9:1-3:

  • Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.

God initially calmed our son’s dismay by helping him to realize that taking his meds once a day accomplished the same result as wearing his glasses. His meds kept him feeling well just as his glasses kept him seeing clearly. After that revelation, our son not only began to successfully manage his difficulty, but felt empowered enough to tell others suffering from the same condition in order to comfort them.

We want God to work through us. Do we trust God enough to allow Him to trust us with a difficulty? Will we allow God to show the world His work even through our weaknesses? Instead of asking God, “Why this?” try asking Him, “How do You want to minister Your grace to others through this?
