5/1: Reality of Good and Evil

The Bible says some great things will happen in our lives. We will dance, laugh, gain, love, and embrace. We will have peace, speak up, sew, and keep things. We will build things up, plant, heal, and experience birth. We’d also all love it if the message about the happenings of our lives only consisted of these positives. Some Biblical messengers would have you think this actually was the case.

However, contrary to messages that would try to convince you that something is wrong with your faith if you experience hardships, the Bible also says some really bad things will happen. We will mourn, weep, lose, hate, and have no one to hug. We will be in war, need to keep silent, tear stuff up, and lose things. We will see stuff break down, pluck up what has been planted, kill, and experience death. (See Ecclesiastes 3:1-22.)

A balanced faith realizes the reality of good and evil, and understands that in a fallen world, some of both will affect everyone. That same balanced faith must be in the God of the universe in order to make it through the negative experiences.

This may sound like a downer of a devotion, but no need for depression or throwing in the towel. We Christians have Romans 8:35-39 as our trump card:

  • Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NKJ)

No matter what your reality is today, absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of God.
