4/19: Stay Outside the Fence

On my way to work, I observed two little boys walking to school. They were talking with each other as kids do and generally having a pretty good time as they went. As they passed an auto mechanic’s yard, two huge watchdogs began to bark furiously at them. Those two little boys didn’t even flinch although the dogs were less than a foot away from them. In fact, the boys seemed so engrossed in their conversation and in their mission to make it to school, that they completely ignored the beasts that looked to be falling all over each other for a chance at attacking their prey.

I’m sure the firmly locked, sturdy fence and gate had something significant to do with the boy’s unconcerned reaction.

Realize that our great enemy, Satan, is behind the sturdy, locked fence of God’s authority. He roams about, though, searching for “fresh meat,” those of us vulnerable to his attacks and temptations. Heed the warning of 1Peter 5:8 that says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (NKJ). Be aware, but not worried because here’s the locked gate: “…greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” I John 4:4b (KJV).

It’s very simple to avoid Satan’s attacks: don’t go inside the fence. Let’s take a lesson from those two little boys when it comes to how we should react to Satan’s attempts to attack us. Just as those dogs were frustrated because they couldn’t get to the boys, and the boys weren’t even rattled by the noise but kept walking toward their destination; so we can be so certain of God’s hedge about us and ignore the tempter’s ploys to get our attention. Let’s keep walking toward our mission and leave a frustrated devil behind.
