4/10: Testify and Persuade

I had the unparalleled privilege to pray with someone to start on her journey with Christ. That moment was a function of many different things working over time to bring the two of us together right then. God had been working many situations out in her heart and He had operated in special ways in my life so as to orchestrate our meeting, our previous conversations, and then the perfect moment for prayer. She perceived something in me from what I said and did (my testimony) that convinced her I was a Christian and that opened the door to a conversation in which I could persuade her of the truth of Christ for her life.

Paul’s testimony and persuasive efforts for Christ got him into some hot water in the latter chapters of the book of Acts. In chapter 28, Paul is finally in Rome after a long journey that was preceded by a heated dispute with the Jews in Jerusalem that almost got him assassinated. The whole argument in the first place was over Paul’s stand on who Jesus Christ was – the Savior of the world, the hope of Israel, the promised Messiah. The twists and turns of the situation ended up giving Paul a platform to share Christ not only with even more Jews, but with the highest government officials of the day. Eventually, Paul would go on to become the apostle to the Gentiles as well.

You never know where your testimony may take you. But wherever it takes you, be ready to follow up your testimony with the persuasive arguments of Scripture that introduce Jesus. Take a clue from Paul:

  • So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening. Acts 28:23 (NKJ) (italics added)

First Peter 3:15 puts it this way: But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear (NKJ). Testify by your life and through your experiences with the living Lord, but back that up with solid explanation and persuasion from the Scriptures concerning Jesus. Always keep your eyes and ears open to opportunities to share Christ with people. What a joy it will be to have that unparalleled privilege of praying with someone as they start their new life with the Master.
