4/6: You Know Better

It always gets me when people say they are unable to understand the Bible. Except for some of the tongues of very isolated people groups, the Bible has been translated into dozens of languages. If we can read our language, we can understand a vast amount of the Bible. The truth of the matter is this: we completely understand what’s being said; we just don’t want to obey what’s being said.

This excuse is not new. The Children of Israel tried to pull the same thing. Just before they were to enter the Promised Land, Moses was giving them final instructions and warnings about how to continue following God and receive His blessing. Moses said, “For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it” Deuteronomy 30:11-14 (NKJ). Basically, Moses said to the people, “Look, don’t pretend God’s word is a mystery. Nobody needs to reinterpret His words to you. You know in your heart what is right, and you can even repeat it to others. Just do what God says.”

We’re the same. We know what God’s word demands and we know better when we disobey. We cannot honestly use the excuse that we don’t understand God’s standard for how we are to live. Let’s just cut the justifications, explanations, and defenses, and live in obedience to the Word.
