3/29: The Little Things

I took my best friend, Michele, to lunch for her birthday. She and I and another of her friends from work dined on the patio of a quaint little restaurant on historic Olvera Street, the very first street in Los Angeles. A celebratory birthday lunch at a Mexican restaurant would hardly be complete without a margarita, but when I declined because I was driving, the question came up as to whether I drink or not, and if not, why not.

My answer (at peril of losing some of my readership) was “rarely,” and that’s because of my writing and speaking ministry. There may be people around who would see me drinking my one rare drink, and think it’s okay for them to drink as much as they’d like. Alcoholism ruins lives and I don’t want people to think, “Since Sharon thinks it’s okay, drinking must be okay for me too.” My food can go down just as well with a cola. As I speak for God, I represent Him, and people judge Him by my words and actions, so even the little things matter.

If you read Nehemiah, chapter 13, you may think he’s nit-picking, but he’s operating under that same principle. Upon hearing the reading of the Book of the Law, he noticed that the people were obeying in the main, but were being disobedient in several different areas. A number of times in that one chapter he’d notice an area of disobedience, point it out, and have the people make the necessary changes.

Are you obeying in the main but slipping up on what you would consider “the little things?” If God’s word deals with it (and God’s word has something to say about everything either by direct precept or in principle), then it’s important enough for us to pay attention and get it straight. If Christ were physically by your side, would you do that, or say that, or go there, or buy that, or read that, or watch that, or laugh at that, or eat that, or wear that? He’s closer than by your side; He’s in your heart.

  • And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17 (NKJ)
  • Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NKJ)

Keep an eye on the little things.
