3/11: What Is Truth?

When the murderous crowd forced Jesus to stand before Pilate in John 18, they were hungry for blood. Pilate, on the other hand, was searching for truth. He was in the position to bring a life-or-death judgment upon a man and he did not take that lightly. He took Jesus aside privately and questioned him, asking him plainly, “What have you done?” When Jesus answered saying that His kingdom was not of this world and that He was born to bear witness of the truth, Pilate keyed right in on that and asked, “What is truth?”

Usually, a question means there’s something about which we are confused, but that question seemed to settle something in Pilate’s mind. He didn’t wait around for the answer, but went out to the crowd and pronounced, “I find no fault in Him at all.”

Pilate had heard the accusations of the people and then he met Jesus personally. When he weighed the messages of the two, the answer was clear. What is truth? Pilate was looking at Truth and he knew it right away.

You’ll know the truth too if you really take the time to look into the eyes of Jesus. An old hymn of the church says it this way: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face. And the things of Earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.”

Hebrews12:2a admonishes us this way, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…” (NIV). Once we are looking at Jesus, the living Truth, it’s great to know that “then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” John 8:32 (NIV).

  1. The Holy word sings in my heart. I am a living witness that what it says is true; and, that one must adhere to it in order to comprehend its fullness.
