2/28: Who’s in Your Posse?

King Ahab and Queen Jezebel led Israel into so much sin that God proclaimed through Elijah the prophet that their entire posterity would be cut off. In the process of time, after Ahab was already dead, under the new king, Jehu, this prophecy was fulfilled. Jehu had all 70 of Ahab’s sons killed. Then several of Jezebel’s own servants, having been secretly loyal to the new king, threw her out of an upstairs window to her death. (See II Kings 9.)

Then Jehu went about to be sure he had wiped out all of Ahab’s sympathizers as well. “So Jehu killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men and his close acquaintances and his priests, until he left him none remaining” II Kings 10:11 (NKJ). In other words, if you were in any way associated with Ahab, you were dead meat.

That sounds pretty harsh, but 1 Corinthians 15:33 warns us: “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits’” (NKJ). We often tell teenagers to be careful who they hang around because they could find themselves with the wrong people, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and end up hurt. This admonition does not only apply to teenagers. We adults should be mindful that our adversary, the devil, seeks to harm our reputation and our witness, and he’ll try to do that through people. Our true character cannot be disguised, but we can allow it to be tainted by the folks we let into our lives.

Who we hang with makes a statement about who we are, both positively and negatively. Peter took it as a bad thing to be identified with Jesus in Matthew 26:71-73, but his speech gave him away as one of Jesus’ followers. Thankfully, after the resurrection and Peter’s infilling by the Holy Spirit, he no longer minded that people recognized his association with the Master. (See Acts 4:13.)

With whom do you associate? Who’s in your posse? Are you influenced or are you the influencer? Do people know you hang out with Jesus?

  1. My keywords in life are, “I Believe;” yet, I know that I am in very good company with the Lord.
