2/18: Oh the Places You’ll Go

An online site describes Dr. Seuss’s book Oh The Places You’ll Go, as a “wonderfully wise graduation speech, the perfect send-off for children starting out in the world… [addressing] the ups and downs life presents while encouraging readers to find the success that lies within them all.” Yes, there are certainly lots of places in life all of us can go nowadays. We love to think about successes, but every turn won’t necessarily be one that leads to something bright and rosy.

The 23rd Psalm speaks of four places. First there are green pastures. The Shepherd will cause us to lie down in them, indicating that He foresees that there will be times when we will need a place to rest. Second, there are still waters. The Shepherd will lead us beside them, indicating that He foresees times when we’ll need to escape some rough waves.

The next two places seem not so nice on the surface. Fourth, there’s the valley of the shadow of death. Ouch! The Shepherd knows that death is a part of this life. There are dangers awaiting our arrival. He, however, will be with us as we walk through these valleys, helping us to notice two things. One, it’s the shadow of death. By definition, shadows only exist because there is a light source somewhere. And two, as we walk through the shadows of tough times, He, our light source, is always with us.

The final place in the psalm is a table. That sounds pretty good until we read that the table is “in the presence of my enemies.” What’s up with that? Here’s the good news about being at this table:

  • God has prepared it. Anything God prepares for us is good for us, so this table is already a place where we want to be.
  • God has allowed the enemies to witness it. Although our enemies are present, they cannot stop the blessings available to us on that table. All they can do is witness God’s favor upon us.
  • God anoints us there. As we are sitting at the table God’s prepared, He pours His anointing on us.
  • God fills our cup to overflowing there. The table is an ever-existing place where God just fills, and fills, and fills, our cup to overflowing.

Dr. Seuss may have had good thoughts for our kids, but it’s great news to know that God has the best places of all in mind for us. And He’ll be there at every turn.
