1/18: The Vaccine

From time to time, a flu epidemic breaks out in various regions of the world. The medication developed to combat the flu is called a vaccine, and that’s why lots of people are afraid to get the shot. You see, a vaccine contains some of whatever disease it is trying to dispel. As I understand it in simplest terms, a vaccine introduces just a little bit of the disease into your body. Then your body’s immune system detects the germ and goes to work building up antibodies to fight it. Once those antibodies establish themselves, if any of those kinds of germs try to invade your body again, the wall is built up against them and voila, you don’t get sick. Then be sure to do the wise, physical things too, like wash your hands often, you should get through the flu season strong and in good health.

During the current crisis, I took my first flu shot. So far so good physically. It seems as though my immune system is working as it should. And I’m washing my hands.

Then I started thinking about our spiritual health. Is there a vaccine that will protect us against evil? Proverbs 3:7-8 holds promise. “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones” (NKJ).

If we take the spiritual vaccine TFOTL (the fear of the Lord) and then do the wise, physical thing – like get away from evil when it’s coughing and sneezing all around us – this verse tells us we’ll be healthy and strong. TFOTL is readily available free of charge from any Bible anywhere. The wise, physical part is up to you.
