1/8: No Pit So Deep

While imprisoned in a wretched German prison camp during the Holocaust, Corrie ten Boom held tight to her faith in God. She and her family had been incarcerated for hiding Jews in a little secret room behind a closet in their home. (Read the amazing true story in her griping book, The Hiding Place.) She watched her sister die in that camp and upon her miraculous release – due to what she would later learn was a clerical error – discovered that the rest of her family had also been killed. Despite the horrors, the hardships, and yes, even times of questioning; Corrie immerged to leave us a quote that has always stuck with me: “There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.”

In Lamentations 3:55-57, the weeping prophet Jeremiah understood this same sentiment. He says, “I called on Your name, O LORD, from the lowest pit. You have heard my voice: ‘Do not hide Your ear from my sighing, from my cry for help.’ You drew near on the day I called on You, and said, ‘Do not fear!’” (NKJ)

Whenever we are “in the pits” of life, we can remember that we are never out of earshot of God. In fact, since He promised to never fail us, leave us, nor forsake us (see Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5), we can know that He is in the pit with us. You’ve heard of pit stops? Well, God draws near when we make pit calls. Shout yours up to Him. There’s no pit so deep that He can’t hear you when you’re in it, preserve you while you’re in it, and bring you out of it.
