Financial Balance

It can be hard sometimes to watch how some folks seem to throw away frivolously while middle and low income people struggle just to make ends meet. (A friend of mine joked that if it weren’t for “ends meat,” he’d be a vegetarian.) Besides the fact that some of us are simply living above our means, lots of folks are experiencing a real financial crisis. It actually would be true for many people that if they had more money, they could get out from under crushing worry brought about by prolonged joblessness, high medical bills, elevated gas prices, towering education expenses, and the general rising cost of living.

However, we’ve also heard stories of folks who do come into large sums of unexpected money and then quickly fritter it away. We even hear tell of multi-millionaire sports or entertainment celebrities who pull in exorbitant contracts and earn their money with their amazing talents, only to be broke soon due to living lavish lifestyles.

What would we do if we came into a large sum of money? What kind of attitude would we have? How would our spending and saving habits change? Would we be responsible to tithe and save?

Wisdom related to money is sprinkled throughout the book of Proverbs. On the issue under discussion here, Solomon writes, “Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God” Proverbs 30:8-9 (NIV).

Funny, isn’t it, that Solomon would write this; after all, he was the richest man who ever lived. We could sarcastically respond to his words by saying, “Sure Solomon, easy for you to say. You never had to worry about your daily bread, so you glibly tell God that’s all you need when in fact, you know you always have way more than that.” But don’t hate: just because Solomon had lots of money doesn’t mean his words are not true. When he was old, he also wrote the book of Ecclesiastes in which we find out life had taught him—even living with all those riches—that all was vanity except for fearing God and keeping His commandments (see Ecclessiastes 12:13).

So maybe it’s time to pray not so much for riches, but for financial balance. Riches may actually tear us away from God, but poverty may pressure us to make detrimental monetary decisions. As we believe God for a balanced financial outlook, He’ll undoubtedly show us how to handle money in a way that brings Him glory.
