God’s Ways

When we come across people who do not quite fit our idea of the norm, we say things about them like, “She has funny ways,” or “He has a strange way about him,” or “They have a bizarre way of looking at things.” In these phrases, we are using the definition of the word “way” to mean “a characteristic manner of acting or doing, a particular style.”

Although we may evaluate the “way” others act or see things in comparison with our “way” of acting or seeing things, there is a standard that exists that exemplifies for us the “way” we should live. Hosea 14:9 tells us, “For the ways of the LORD are right; the righteous walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them” (NKJ). The Hebrew word translated “ways” in this verse is “derek” which figuratively means “a course of life or mode of action.” In other words, this verse is talking about the manner in which God acts. It’s telling us how God does things. And what are we told about how God acts and does things? His manner and His actions are always right.

So what does that mean for us? The rest of the verse makes that clear. Since God’s ways are right, we can know that we are right (or righteous) as we duplicate how He does things. This is not rocket science, it’s Barney-simple: the righteous act like God acts. When we balk at doing things God’s way, we are showing ourselves up as transgressors, rebels who want to revolt, break away, and act in an opposite “way.”

It’s hard to come face-to-face with our own depravity, to actually admit that our ways don’t line up with God’s ways. However, when once we face our sin nature head-on, identify it and all it produces as such, and surrender that sick, inky slime to God, He will wash it away. He’ll then begin to show us His ways and He’ll give us the strength and direction to start walking in them. The benefits are astounding, for example:

  •  that you may have a walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. Colossians 1:10 (NKJ)
  • And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. I John 3:22 (NKJ)
  • When a man’s ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Proverbs 16:7 (NKJ)

Be encouraged today to walk in God’s ways.
