Week 27, Day 3: Shine

The July 2nd entry in Oswald Chambers’s classic devotional My Utmost for His Highest states that “whenever the Holy Ghost sees a chance of glorifying Jesus, He will take your heart, your nerves, your whole personality, and simply make you blaze and glow with devotion to Jesus Christ.”* Journal or talk to God about your heart’s responses to the passages about shining upon which you meditated in the previous devotion. Be specific with Him about your life, your work, and how your light shines.

  •  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew5:16(NKJ)

Lord, let the work of my hands point people to You. May people see Your glory through my work.

  •  The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. Proverbs4:18(NIV)

God, intensify the light others see coming from me.

  •  Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter– when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Isaiah 58:6-8 (NIV)

Father, lead me to fasts You intend for me to observe.

  •  Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the LORD will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Isaiah 60:1-3 (NKJ)

Savior, let those who don’t know You—both small and great—see You shining through me.

  •  For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. Ephesians 5:8 (NIV)

Father, help me live as the child of the light You have made me to be. Don’t let me be an embarrassment to Your kingdom and Your name.

  •  …continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life… Philippians 2:12-16 (NIV)

God, keep my lifestyle pure so Your light in my life will not be dimmed.

Prayer of Thanksgiving: God, I’m both thankful and humbled to think that You would let Your glory shine through me.
