Week 26, Day 5: On Knowing Names

Spiritual Discipline to Practice:  Spiritual Friendship

The Cheers TV show theme song, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” penned by  Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo, says:

  •  Sometimes you want to go,
  • Where everybody knows your name,
  • and they’re always glad you came.
  • You wanna be where you can see,
  • our troubles are all the same
  • You wanna be where everybody knows Your name.
  • You wanna go where people know,
  • people are all the same,
  • You wanna go where everybody knows your name.*

It’s nice to be among friends. If Christ is in our hearts, He calls us His friends. John 15:15 says, “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you” (NKJ). And friends know each other by name.

This weekend, practice the spiritual discipline of spiritual friendship. Connect with those who are on this planet joining with you on your journey through this life. Call, send a letter or card, text, e-mail: get in contact somehow. Remind them of how very much they mean to you, how much you love them, and how your life wouldn’t be the same without them in it. Then determine to keep the contacts frequent. It is nice to be where at least somebody knows your name, and that place with spiritual friends is in each other’s hearts.
