Week 26, Day 4: On Knowing Names

The third Commandment deals with what our response should be to God’s name. Here is the rendering of Exodus 20:7 from several Bible versions:

  •  New King James: You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
  • New International Version: You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
  • New Century Version: You must not use the name of the Lord your God thoughtlessly; the Lord will punish anyone who misuses his name.
  • The Message: No using the name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won’t put up with the irreverent use of his name.

It’s pretty clear that we are not supposed to mess around when it comes to the use of God’s name: don’t take it in vain, misuse it, use it thoughtlessly, nor use it irreverently. What’s exciting to realize is that we can know God’s name and we can use God’s name in praise, worship, and for requests. You see, this Commandment is not a restriction against using God’s name at all, but a guideline as to how to use it correctly. In fact, the first two Commandments feed positively into this one. Since we are to acknowledge no other god but our God (Commandment 1), and since we are to make no idols or images to worship (Commandment 2), then since we have only one name to use, we need to remember to use God’s name properly.

So today, be thankful not only that God knows your name, but that you know His. Take time to journal, make a list, or just think through the times when you have been able to turn to the name of God for an answer or fulfillment of a need. As you meditate, include thinking of ways in which God is leading you toward knowing His name better.

Prayer of Supplication: God, reveal to me a deeper understanding of Your name, how I should honor it, and how I should properly use it.
