Week 12, Day 2 – Close Enough to Trust

At the wedding atCana, Mary trusted Jesus so much she knew all that was necessary was to mention a problem to Him and He’d take care of it. Mary could expect this of Him because they were just that close.

As Jesus’ ministry progressed and people started calling Him “Lord,” He may have reflected back from time to time on His relationship with His mother. All the people now following were expecting Him to do stuff for them, yet they showed no committed relationship to Him. During one of His sermons, He posed a question on this subject to the thronging crowd and then went on to explain an important truth.

  •  “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ [Jesus asks] and do not do what I say?
  • I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete” In Luke 6:46-49 (NIV).

And again in the book of John, Jesus repeats the sentiment.

  • “You are my friends if you do what I command” John15:14(NIV).

Meditate on the verses above as you think today about just how much you really do trust Jesus. Do you trust Him enough to do whatever He commands?

Prayer of Confession: Lord, I confess to You my hesitancy when I honestly think about whether or not I would actually do whatever You command me to do.
