Following Who God Has Chosen

Week 8 – Day 5

Spiritual Discipline to Practice: Submiission

Originally a military term, submission has to do with voluntarily placing oneself under the authority of another. Submission has been described as “power under control.” In other words, you may be smarter or more capable than the one in leadership over you, but you use that intelligence or capability to enhance the whole and even make the leader look good. By submitting, you are resisting your urges to subversively overthrow the authority, opting instead to channel your energies toward the betterment of your situation.

Consider those God has placed in positions of authority over you, especially those in spiritual leadership roles. Think through whether or not you have been a follower who is a joy to lead. Or to the contrary, are you a follower (employee, student, committee member, parishioner, spouse, child) who causes your leader to dread the very sight of you? Are you one whose entrance causes smiles or eye-rolls and sighs? Would those in leadership compete to have you on their team, or when your name comes up, do they frown and hope all positions reporting to them are already full? This weekend, evaluate your strengths and weaknesses as a follower. Some apologies on your part directed towards your leader(s) may be in order.
