Week 8, Day 1: Following Who God has Chosen

Choosing a Leader

Here in America, we are experiencing the first term of a President who we chose by the democratic process of voting. The citizens of this country sized up many candidates, listened to debates, read newspaper articles, and watched the pundits as they argued back and forth. Some of us prayed about our decision. In the end, according to our system, the majority ruled and Barack Obama is now our 44th President of the United States.

Iran also chose a leader. The citizens of that country voted too, but the country is in an uproar because it’s questionable as to whether or not those votes were counted accurately. According to the masses of people demonstrating in the streets, the guy who was re-elected as their leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is not the guy most of the people voted for.

The democratic process works when it is not corrupted and when the minority honors the choice of the majority. However, God’s system of putting people in leadership positions is not a democracy. God rules by theocracy. According to Wikipedia:

  • Theocracy is a form of government in which a god or deity is recognized as the state’s supreme civil ruler… In Biblical Greek, “theocracy” means a rule by God. For believers, theocracy is a form of government in which divine power governs an earthly human state, either in a personal incarnation or, more often, via religious institutional representatives (i.e., a church), replacing or dominating civil government.

When it came time for David to take over as king in place of Saul, God told Samuel the prophet. Samuel, in turn, anointed David to be king. The only problem was that Saul had not yet given up the throne. I Chronicles chapters 11 and 12 detail how thousands and thousands of men began to switch their allegiance from Saul to David. “For at that time they came to David day by day to help him, until it was a great army, like the army of God… and (they) came to David at Hebron to turn over the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD” 1 Chronicles 12:22-23 (NKJ).

We’d like theocracy to apply to our country, but even if it can’t, we can allow it to apply in our personal lives. Are we choosing to faithfully follow those whom God has set up for us to follow? Women, are we choosing our mates wisely, according to divine leading rather than devilish lust? Men are you choosing your earthly spiritual leaders (pastors and mentors) by God’s direction? Children, are you being obedient to the righteous parents God has placed over you?

God is still well able to choose our leaders. The question is, will we wisely choose to follow those who God has chosen?

Prayer of Adoration: You are an amazing God to supply us with leaders who have our best interest at heart. I praise you for the following leaders in my life:
