Our Help

It certainly is nice to have help. As much as we proudly depend upon ourselves to take care of our own business, we can all still appreciate it when someone comes alongside to help. God is not opposed to our having help either. In fact, the first thing God did after giving Adam a job was to supply him with help. God Himself said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him” Genesis2:18(NKJ).

That phrase “a helper comparable to him” comes from 3 Hebrew words. Helper is `ezer (ay’-zer) which means “aid;” comparable is neged (neh’-ghed) which means “part opposite, a counterpart or mate;” and for him is le- (le) which has many applications but in this case means “belonging to.” In other words, God supplied specifically for Adam a personal assistant who had gifts and talents opposite from his own that were necessary for the adequate and excellent completion of the task God had set before him.

The relationship between a husband and a wife continues today as the perfect example of the relationship between Christ and the Church which is His bride and His body. Among so many other things He does for the Church, He helps her. This is the same relationship God has directly with us as His people. He helps us by supplying specifically for us a personal assistant (the Holy Spirit) who has all we need to adequately and excellently complete the tasks God has set before us.

Psalm 121 gives us amazing reassurance knowing God is our help.

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills– from whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keepsIsraelshall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; he shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore” (NKJ).

Make yourself keenly aware today of all the ways in which God has been and is being your help. And realize as I said, it’s nice to have help.
