The Shining Spirit Within

When King Darius the Mede took over Belshazzar’s kingdom, he inherited the Hebrews who had been taken captive years before by Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar’s dad. Darius divided the rulership of his newly possessed kingdom among 120 satraps (like mayors) and placed three men (like governors) over them. One of those three was the Hebrew Daniel. It didn’t take long though for Darius to realize there was something extra-special about Daniel, and any ruler worth his salt moves to place his best people in the most influential positions. Daniel 6:3 states, “Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm” (NKJ).

You can imagine the uproar among the other governors and satraps. Not only were they being passed over, they would soon be answering to this former captive. Unthinkable! “So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him. Then these men said, ‘We shall not find any charge against this Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God’” Daniel 6:4-5 (NKJ).

Daniel was all that and a bag of chips because he lived a life consistent with His belief in the God he served. He was an excellent worker because his God was an excellent God. He was a compassionate and honest ruler because his God was a compassionate and honest ruler. People could find no fault in Daniel because there was no fault in the God his life mirrored.

The Spirit of God can shine through our lives in the same way it shone through Daniel’s. We must just remember to stand up for God as Daniel did and live a life consistent with the character of who we know God to be. No fault or charge can successfully and legitimately be leveled against us unless our haters attack the law of our God. While remaining respectful of those around us who don’t believe in our God (as Daniel did when speaking with Belshazzar—see Daniel 5:13-30), we don’t need to back down from telling them the truth about Him. We can confidently stand up for God because God is well able through us to stand up for Himself.
