Hear from God; Leave Different

Nine words spoken by my pastor Rev. Welton Pleasant profoundly impacted my life. He said, “When you open your Bible, God opens His mouth.” It was not news to me that the Bible is God’s message to us—His very word; however, that statement put an entire new spin on my quiet times. I sincerely expected now to hear from God every time I read the Scriptures. In fact, these daily devotions are a direct result of this quest after God’s voice, and upon hearing it, what difference it can make in my life.

God intimated at this same connection between His voice and our change as He directed Ezekiel in the manner of worship. He said, “But when the people of the land come before the Lord on the appointed feast days, whoever enters by way of the north gate to worship shall go out by way of the south gate; and whoever enters by way of the south gate shall go out by way of the north gate. He shall not return by way of the gate through which he came, but shall go out through the opposite gate.” More than a traffic flow issue through the sanctuary, festival, or feast day event, this instruction seems more like a life flow issue. When the people came into the presence of God, He expected them to leave a different way; He expected their lives to be changed.

How is it even possible to hear God’s voice and remain unaffected by the contact? Let’s take our experience with God beyond the church building and church events. Each time we read the Bible, hear a sermon based on the Bible, or rejoice to a song written from the Scriptures, know that God is opening His mouth. However you came to your quiet time or worship experience, listen closely for God’s voice, and expect and determine to leave a different way.

One Response to “Hear from God; Leave Different”

  1. Amen to ‘Leave Different’, hearing God’s voice in scripture. I thank God for this revelation a few years as I was being discipled. In addition to studying sermons I had heard and memorizing scripture, I began to read the Bible from Genenis to Revelations, as a daily assingment, about 7-8 chapters a day. I found that what ever I needed; direction, inspiration, instruction, rebuking, healing, whatever I was praying for God- answered me veryspecifically in the next passage of scripture through history, law, poetry or a parable. Every single situation I was facing was addressed in the next reading! So, I get excited about this particular daily reading, just to see what God is going to say to me next.
