God’s Will is Abstinence

“God, just let me know what Your will is, and I’ll do it!” This is probably the cry of many of our hearts. In fact, we’d probably agree with the Psalmist who said, “I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart” Psalm 40:8 (NKJ). But do we really mean this? When we say it, I’m afraid we’re waiting for some awesome sign from heaven, perhaps in the form of an audible voice, handwriting on a wall, a random comment made by a complete stranger, or some such phenomenon. However, God has given us an entire book filled with His express will for our lives. If we’re looking for His will, we can start in the Bible.

One case of God telling us His perfect will for our lives is in the area of our sexual behavior. I Thessalonians 4:3 – 7 tells us plainly:

  •  For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. (NKJ)
  •  (Also see I Corinthians 6:9-20; 7:2; Galatians 5:19; Ephesians 5:2-4; Colossians 3:5-6; Hebrews 13:4; Revelations 21:8; and Revelations 22:14-15.)

So if we want to live within the will of God, we must abstain from sexual immorality. That means we do not lust, do not fornicate (have sex as a single person), and do not commit adultery (have sex as a married person with someone who is not our spouse). Failure to abstain means we are in sin and we can expect dire consequences (read Romans6:23).

With the help of the Holy Spirit, as we are controlling ourselves in the area of our sexual behavior, we should start searching the Scriptures to discover more of the will of God. Be challenged today to start looking through Scripture for passages about God’s will. Find a passage, study it, understand it, and then apply it. Then move on to the next. I guarantee you, you’ll be busy for quite some time, and you will have reached your goal: to live and operate in the will of God.
