God’s Earth Made on Purpose

Lots of us do our share to preserve the Earth. My husband and I recycle cans and plastic bottles. I put my trash, even the smallest candy wrappers, into trash receptacles. We don’t pour used oil down storm drains and we keep our cars in good repair so as not to emit too many damaging emissions into the air.

The save-the-planet people may not realize it, but whatever religion or faith they follow, when they show concern about the Earth, they are doing something that honors the God of the Bible. Isaiah 45:18 identifies our God as the One “who created the heavens, who is God, who formed the earth and made it, who has established it, who did not create it in vain, who formed it to be inhabited,” and this God goes on to finish this verse by identifying Himself with these words: “I am the LORD, and there is no other” (NKJ).

Enjoy the pleasures of the planet today. Take time to admire the splendor of the vast sky with its clouds by day and stars by night. Stand in the shade of a beautiful tree, inhale the fragrance of a lovely rose, or feel the cool grass between your toes. Go outside and take a deep breath of the free air perfectly blended with just the right mixture of oxygen and other elements essential for our survival. Reflect upon the order in which everything you see was originally created, each day’s work to support the next—light; then the firmament dividing the waters, then the dry land with herbs, grasses, trees, etc.; then the lights (sun, stars, etc.); then fish and birds—until the sixth day when God produced His crowning creative jewel, the human. Realize anew, as the above verse indicates, that God “did not create [the Earth] in vain, [He] formed it to be inhabited.”

God made the Earth with a purpose. All we can see in it every single day ought to remind us that God’s purpose for creating the Earth was to make a place for us to live and enjoy. With all this in mind, I suppose it only makes sense that we Christians should be the most supportive save-the-planet people of all.
